Angoulême, Marie-Thérèse Charlotte, duchess of

(1778-1851)
   royal figure
Born at Versailles, the daughter of king louis XVI and marie Antoinette of Austria, princess Marie-Thérèse was known as "Madame Royale." In 1792, during the revolution of 1789, she was held prisoner with her family in the Temple Prison, then later (1795) was sent to Austria. In 1799, she married her cousin, louis-antoine de bourbon, duke of angoulême. She returned to France in 1814, but because of her support of the clerical reactionism there remained unpopular.
